The Village Playbox community theatre troupe of Haddon Heights, New Jersey celebrates its 71st continuous season with its 2010– 2011 schedule of shows, without ever having its own theatre. It continues to use Haddon Heights High School, and the town's Presbyterian and Methodist Churches for productions.
Playbox has been fortunate to have a great relationship with the Haddon Heights Board of Education, which has granted us the use of the high school auditorium for most of our shows over our 71 years. We will be staging three of our main-stage shows of our 2010-2011 Season in the social hall of the Haddon Heights First Presbyterian Church, thanks to the understanding and generosity of the church Session. The social hall is handicap accessible.
Beginning with two shows in 1940, the troupe has increased to three, and then four productions with the addition of a musical for children in 1975. Playbox has enjoyed many notable events over the years, from entertaining the troops at Fort Dix in the 40's to winning a trio of New Jersey Theatre League state festivals in the 90's.
Playbox focuses on comedies, mysteries, and light dramas. We have staged most of Neil Simon's shows to great success, plus those of Noel Coward, Alan Ayckbourn, and Agatha Christie. Senior Director Jim Alexander has staged more than 50 shows for Playbox.
Our auditions are “open” and we encourage newcomers into our productions and the club. Please call 856-547-8284 or 609-567-4016 for more information.
The Village Playbox is a long-standing member of both the New Jersey Theatre League (NJTL) and the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT)
